What are Weight Loss Injections?
By now almost everyone in the country is aware of the new weekly weight loss shots on the market. Two medications are available that have had amazing results for weight loss. Semaglutide and Tirzepetide are both encritin co-agonists, that suppress the Ghrelin (hunger) hormone, slow gastric emptying, and increase insulin sensitivity.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) agonist and is well-known for its effectiveness not only with diabetes management but also with weight loss. GLP-1 agonists stimulate the receptor for the hormone glucagon-like peptide 1, which increases insulin production and satiety (or feelings of fullness). Research has shown that Semaglutide can assist a patient to lose 15 -20% of their body weight.
As a GLP-1 agonist, Tirzepatide increases insulin production to lower blood sugar. It’s also been shown to slow digestion, leading to a feeling of fullness that can help curb appetite. Tirzepatide is also a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) agonist. This means unlike Semaglutide which only hit one encretin receptor for weight loss, Terzepatide hits two giving patients even more weight loss percentage. Tirzepatide has been shown to result in 25% or more body weight reduction.
Since Tirzepatide is a GLP receptor agonist (glucagon-like-peptide-1), it mimics the hormone GLP-1 that is known for regulating hunger, which results in individuals eating less food. Additionally, it also mimics the GIP hormone (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) so it is like a double dose of fat-burner.
Both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, work by directly targeting the appetite receptors in your brain, enabling you to lose weight faster. Other weight loss medications may activate or deactivate these receptors as well, which can help you reduce your overall appetite.
These medications are commercially available and may be covered by insurance for those who qualify. For those who do not qualify for the commercially available options, we offer these medications through our office for those patients who use them as part of a larger more comprehensive weight loss program.
